In a qualitative baseline study, together with the Monheimer Institute, we investigated just how far a fondness for animals goes and the daily relationship between people and dogs. We would like to present here the results of this two-week online forum about German dog-owners and their four-legged friends.
It seems a dog is a very special pet. While for some a dog may just be a dear pet, which is fed and looked after, for others a dog is far more than that. They see their dog as a real friend and companion; a family member. Therefore, it is normal for them to dress, cook and share a bed with their dog. Interaction between the owner and dog is similar to that of between parent and child. However, no matter how humanized the handling of the dog is, all dog-owners agree that having a dog makes them happy. Walking a dog brings them out into the fresh air and enables them to meet people, their dog listens and is always loyal. It doesn’t matter whether they have to take him out for walkies in the pouring rain or if their day is determined by the four-legged friend; dog-owners make these sacrifices willingly. At the end of the day, they get back so much more from their dogs.
The cost of a keeping a dog was also discussed with dog-owners, read about the results in the next article.
