For months the yellow vests have been dominating the news. At the start of the movement, it seemed very simple to grasp; in their yellow vests they demonstrate against a raise in fuel tax. However, what seems simple at  first, becomes more complex when a closer look is taken.

respondi investigated the different groups of the yellow vest movement, their sympathisers and their opponents. Even though the raise of the fuel tax is generally regarded as the cause of the resentment, the yellow vests focus on two main demands: More social justice and a higher involvement of the citizens in political decisions. However, the different groups differ considerably in the ways they want to achieve their claims. Right-wing, left-wing, social background as well as active or passive participation – just to name a few of the factors which identify the three different groups among the yellow vest movement.
